Did Iblis Appear Before Prophet Musa (Peace Be Upon Him)?

Authored by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafizahullah)

Answer

Yes, Iblis did appear before Prophet Musa (عليه السلام).

As reported by Qurshee in Talbees Iblees, the following incident is mentioned:

Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) was once seated when Iblis suddenly approached him. He was wearing a multi-colored cloak. As he drew near, he removed the cloak and set it aside before coming closer. Musa (peace be upon him) asked, "Who are you?" He replied, "I am Iblis." Musa said, "May Allah not keep you alive! What has brought you here?" Iblis replied, "I have come to greet you due to your noble status in the sight of Allah."

Musa (peace be upon him) then asked about the cloak he was wearing. Iblis said it was something he used to snatch away the hearts of the children of Adam. Musa then asked, "What is that one thing that, if a human commits it, you gain control over him?" Iblis replied:

❶ When a person is proud in his heart
❷ When he is impressed with the abundance of his own deeds
❸ When he forgets his sins

Then Iblis gave three pieces of advice:

Never isolate yourself with a woman who is not lawful for you, for when someone does so, I leave all my companions and personally become his companion to drag him into fitnah.

Always fulfill a covenant made with Allah, for when someone commits to a promise with Allah, I remain close until something comes between him and that promise.

Do not delay in giving charity, for when someone intends to give but hesitates, I leave everyone else and make it my mission to prevent that charity from being given.

Then Iblis walked away saying, “Woe to me! He (Musa) will now warn the children of Adam against these three things.”

Conclusion
This account illustrates the deceptive strategies of Iblis and his specific focus on exploiting human weaknesses like pride, negligence of sin, and delay in righteous actions. It serves as a powerful reminder to remain vigilant and sincere in worship and dealings.
