Dhikr During Wuḍūʾ: Examining the Authenticity of Reported Supplications

The Ruling on Reciting Specific Adhkār During Wuḍūʾ

Source: Fatāwā Amun Pūrī by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amun Pūrī

The Question

What is the ruling on reciting adhkār (specific supplications) while washing each limb during wuḍūʾ?

The Answer

There is no authentic evidence for reciting any specific adhkār when washing the individual limbs of wuḍūʾ. All narrations reported in this regard are unreliable and unauthentic.

Scholarly Statement

ʿAllāmah Ibn al-Qayyim (751H):
“All the aḥādīth concerning adhkār for the limbs of wuḍūʾ are fabricated. Not a single one of them reaches the level of authenticity.”
(al-Manār al-Munīf, p. 120)

Conclusion

  • No specific duʿāʾ or dhikr is legislated for washing each limb in wuḍūʾ.
  • The reports on this matter are baseless.
  • The Sunnah is to recite Bismillāh at the beginning and the Shahādah + Duʿāʾ after completing wuḍūʾ, as authentically reported.
