After the obligatory prayer, should one get up immediately or remain seated to recite adhkār and supplications?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
It is better and more virtuous to remain seated after the obligatory ṣalāh and recite the prescribed adhkār and duʿāʾs, rather than standing up immediately.
In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, it is narrated that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:
"When a person finishes his prayer and remains seated in the same place of ṣalāh, without breaking wuḍūʾ or harming anyone, the angels continue to supplicate for him, saying:
اللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ
"O Allāh, forgive him and have mercy on him."
(Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Bāb al-Ḥadath fī al-Masjid)
As mentioned in the ḥadīth:
«فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَسْتَكْثِرْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَسْتَقِلَّ»
"So whoever wishes, let him increase, and whoever wishes, let him decrease."

❖ Question:
After the obligatory prayer, should one get up immediately or remain seated to recite adhkār and supplications?
❖ Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
It is better and more virtuous to remain seated after the obligatory ṣalāh and recite the prescribed adhkār and duʿāʾs, rather than standing up immediately.
✦ Prophetic Guidance
✦ Explanation
- The longer the worshipper remains seated in remembrance, the longer the angels supplicate for him.
- If he remains for a short time, the angels make duʿāʾ for him for that short time only.
As mentioned in the ḥadīth:
«فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَسْتَكْثِرْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَسْتَقِلَّ»
"So whoever wishes, let him increase, and whoever wishes, let him decrease."
Conclusion
- It is not forbidden to leave immediately after prayer.
- But it is more virtuous and rewarding to remain seated for some time, engaging in adhkār and duʿāʾ, to benefit from the continuous prayers of the angels.
