❖ Deliberately Abandoning an Essential Pillar (Rukn) Invalidates the Prayer ❖
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
The deliberate omission of a rukn (essential pillar) in Salah renders the prayer invalid, as supported by clear scholarly principles and legal maxims.
Just as missing a condition like wudu or niyyah (intention) nullifies the act, so too does deliberately omitting a rukn.
✔ This is based on the juristic principle:
“The absence of a condition necessitates the invalidity of what is conditioned upon it.”
[Al-Iḥkām by al-Āmidī: 1/121; Al-Muwāfaqāt by al-Shāṭibī: 1/187]
A rukn is defined as an essential component of an action, such that the action cannot be completed without it.
[Al-Farā’iḍ: p. 17]
If a person forgetfully omits a condition or a pillar, two situations may arise:
He is not held accountable due to the following:
﴿لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا﴾
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.”
And the Hadith:
"إن الله تجاوز عن أمتي الخطأ والنسيان..."
“Indeed Allah has pardoned my Ummah for mistakes and forgetfulness…”
✔ Based on these proofs, he is not sinful.
➤ If a condition was missed (e.g. no wudu), then the entire Salah must be repeated, as the prayer was never valid to begin with.
➤ If a pillar was omitted, he must:
✔ This is evident from the well-known Ḥadīth of Dhū al-Yadayn, where the Prophet ﷺ completed the missed portion and then performed sujūd al-sahw.
[Bukhārī: 714]
Some scholars have stated:
“Missing one of the farā’iḍ (obligatory acts) does not invalidate the prayer.”
[Al-Sayl al-Jarrār: 1/234]
➤ Their view is that:
[Al-Iḥkām fī Uṣūl al-Aḥkām by al-Āmidī: 1/91; Al-Mustaṣfā by al-Ghazālī: 1/27; Al-Muwāfaqāt by al-Shāṭibī: 1/109]
✔ The stronger and well-supported opinion is that:
Deliberately abandoning any rukn (essential pillar) of Salah invalidates the prayer.
✔ However, if the rukn was forgotten and later remembered, it must be completed with sujūd al-sahw, as per the Prophetic precedent.

✦ Abandoning a Pillar of Prayer Invalidates It
The deliberate omission of a rukn (essential pillar) in Salah renders the prayer invalid, as supported by clear scholarly principles and legal maxims.
➊ Analogy with Missing a Condition (Shart):
Just as missing a condition like wudu or niyyah (intention) nullifies the act, so too does deliberately omitting a rukn.
✔ This is based on the juristic principle:
“The absence of a condition necessitates the invalidity of what is conditioned upon it.”
➋ Definition and Function of a Rukn:
A rukn is defined as an essential component of an action, such that the action cannot be completed without it.
✦ Ruling in Case of Forgetfulness
If a person forgetfully omits a condition or a pillar, two situations may arise:
◈ ➊ He Never Remembers Later:
He is not held accountable due to the following:
﴿لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا﴾
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.”
And the Hadith:
"إن الله تجاوز عن أمتي الخطأ والنسيان..."
“Indeed Allah has pardoned my Ummah for mistakes and forgetfulness…”
✔ Based on these proofs, he is not sinful.
◈ ➋ He Later Remembers:
➤ If a condition was missed (e.g. no wudu), then the entire Salah must be repeated, as the prayer was never valid to begin with.
➤ If a pillar was omitted, he must:
- Perform the missed rukn immediately,
- Complete the rest of the Salah,
- And perform sujūd al-sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) at the end.
✔ This is evident from the well-known Ḥadīth of Dhū al-Yadayn, where the Prophet ﷺ completed the missed portion and then performed sujūd al-sahw.
✦ Contrasting Opinion
Some scholars have stated:
“Missing one of the farā’iḍ (obligatory acts) does not invalidate the prayer.”
➤ Their view is that:
- Performing the farā’iḍ brings reward,
- While leaving them results in sin and punishment,
- But the prayer is not necessarily nullified.
✦ Conclusion (Rājiḥ View)
✔ The stronger and well-supported opinion is that:
Deliberately abandoning any rukn (essential pillar) of Salah invalidates the prayer.
✔ However, if the rukn was forgotten and later remembered, it must be completed with sujūd al-sahw, as per the Prophetic precedent.
