Declaring War Against Those Who Harm Allah’s Friends

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated: The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Allah said: Whoever shows enmity to a friend (Wali) of Mine, I declare war against him."
[Bukhari: 6502, Kitab al-Riqaq, Bab al-Tawadhu‘]

The Companions: The Foremost Among Allah’s Friends

The Companions (رضي الله عنهم) are the highest-ranking Awliya’ (friends of Allah). Allah has declared His pleasure with them in the Qur’an.

Angering the Companions is Angering Allah

‘Aidh bin ‘Amr (RA) narrated: The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr (RA):

"O Abu Bakr! If you have angered these poor Muslims (Salman, Suhayb, and Bilal رضي الله عنهم), then you have angered your Lord."
[Muslim: 2504, Fada'il al-Sahabah]

Cursing the Companions is a Major Sin

Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (RA) narrated: The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Do not revile my Companions. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, if one of you were to spend gold equal to Mount Uhud, it would not equal a handful or even half a handful spent by one of them."
[Bukhari: 3673; Muslim: 2541]

Allah’s Curse Upon Those Who Curse the Companions

◈ The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever curses my Companions, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people."
[Sahih al-Jami‘: 6285]

Love for Ali (RA): A Sign of Faith

Ali (RA) said under oath:

"The Prophet ﷺ pledged to me that only a believer will love me and only a hypocrite will hate me."
[Muslim: 78]

Love for the Ansar: A Sign of Faith

Anas (RA) narrated: The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Love for the Ansar is a sign of faith, and hatred for them is a sign of hypocrisy."
[Bukhari: 17; Muslim: 74]

Al-Bara’ bin ‘Azib (RA):
"Only a believer loves the Ansar, and only a hypocrite hates them. Whoever loves them, Allah will love him. And whoever hates them, Allah will hate him."
[Bukhari: 3783; Muslim: 75]

❖ Harming Neighbors

Faith Requires Good Treatment of Neighbors

Abu Shurayh al-Khuzā‘i (RA) narrated:

"Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should treat his neighbor kindly."
[Bukhari: 6019; Muslim: 48]

A Neighbor’s Complaint Can Deprive One of Paradise

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated:

"The one whose neighbor is not safe from his mischief will not enter Paradise."
[Muslim: 46]

Threefold Oath Against One Who Harms His Neighbor

◈ The Prophet ﷺ said:

"By Allah, he is not a believer. By Allah, he is not a believer. By Allah, he is not a believer."
The Companions asked, "Who, O Messenger of Allah?"
He said: "The one whose neighbor is not safe from his harm."
[Bukhari: 6016]

Neighbor's Testimony is a Measure of Goodness

‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud (RA) reported: A man asked, "How do I know if I’m doing good or bad?"
The Prophet ﷺ said:

"If your neighbor says you’re doing good, then you are. If your neighbor says you’re doing wrong, then you are."
[Ibn Majah: 4223]

Worship Without Good Manners is Useless

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated:

"A woman who prays at night and fasts during the day but harms her neighbors with her tongue — the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘There is no good in her; she is in Hell.’"
[Musnad Ahmad: 2/440]

Practical Advice for Being a Good Neighbor:

◈ Do not construct buildings that block your neighbor’s sunlight.
◈ Avoid placing windows that overlook their home.
◈ Do not play loud music or media.
◈ Never throw trash at their doorstep.

❖ Harming Other Muslims

Qur’anic Warnings:

وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ...
"Those who hurt believing men and women without cause bear the burden of a slander and a manifest sin."
[Al-Ahzab: 58]

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا يَسْخَرْ قَوْمٌ...

"O believers! Let not one group mock another; they may be better. Nor let women mock other women. Do not insult one another or call each other by offensive nicknames."
[Al-Hujurat: 11]

The Worst Person on the Day of Judgment

Aisha (RA) narrated:

"The worst person in rank on the Day of Judgment will be the one whom people avoid due to his foul language."
[Bukhari: 6032; Muslim: 2591]

❖ Severing Ties Among Muslims

Weekly Opportunity for Forgiveness and Its Exception

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated:

"Every Monday and Thursday the gates of Paradise are opened. Everyone who does not associate anything with Allah is forgiven—except for the two who harbor enmity. It is said: ‘Delay these two until they reconcile.’"
[Muslim: 2565]

More Than Three Days of Separation is Forbidden

Abu Hurairah (RA):

"It is not permissible for a Muslim to cut off from his brother for more than three days. Whoever does and dies in that state will enter Hell."
[Abu Dawood: 4914]

One Year of Severance Equals Killing

Abu Khirash al-Sulami (RA):

"Whoever cuts off ties with his Muslim brother for a year, it is as if he has killed him."
[Abu Dawood: 4915]

Practical Guidelines:

◈ Cutting ties is not allowed without a valid Shar‘i excuse.
◈ Worldly disputes should not justify cutting relations.
◈ If temporary severance leads to reform, it is allowed.
◈ If it causes more harm, maintain contact with wisdom and kindness.
