What is the remedy for envy (ḥasad)?
Envy can be treated through the following methods:
① Be content with what Allah has decreed for you in your destiny.
② Do good to the one who envies you.
③ Be patient over the harm caused by the envier.
④ Conceal your blessings and seek to fulfill your needs with discretion, for indeed, every possessor of blessings is envied.
⑤ Continuously seek Allah’s protection and undergo ruqyah (spiritual healing).
Allah Almighty says:
«وَإِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ ﴿٥١﴾»
“And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message and they say: Indeed, he is mad.”
[Surah al-Qalam: 51]
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
«العين حق»
“The evil eye is real.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 10/319, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2/78]
Narrated by Sayyidah ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها:
The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
«استعيذوا بالله فإن العين حق»
“Seek refuge in Allah, for the evil eye is indeed real.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ – Sunan Ibn Mājah, Hadith No. 3508]
She also narrated:
«أمرني النبى أو أمرنا أن نسترقي من العين»
“The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم instructed me—or instructed us—to seek ruqyah (spiritual treatment) for protection against the evil eye.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī with al-Fatḥ 1/199, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 4/183]
