Correcting Names: From Basheer Razzaq to Basheer Abdur-Razzaq

Correctness of Names: Basheer Razzaq or Basheer Abdur-Razzaq? Sharʿi Clarification

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil in the Light of Qur’an and Hadith, Vol. 1, p. 545

Question:
Respected Hafiz Sahib, you advised that instead of writing “Basheer Razzaq,” I should write and say “Basheer Abdur-Razzaq.” Please clarify this matter. Another issue is that in my school certificate and national ID card, the name is written as “Basheer Razzaq.” Kindly suggest a solution to correct this mistake so that it is properly rectified. In shāʾ Allāh, from today my name will be “Basheer Abdur-Razzaq.”

Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

✿ As far as I understand, your respected father’s name is Abdur-Razzaq.
✿ Therefore, when you write or say “Basheer Razzaq,” what you actually mean is “Basheer ibn Abdur-Razzaq.”
✿ Reflect carefully: your father’s name is Abdur-Razzaq, not Razzaq.

Important Point

“Ar-Razzaq” is one of the Names of Allah, as He says in the Qur’an:
﴿إِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ﴾

✿ You are the son of Abdur-Razzaq, not the son of Razzaq. For Allah says:
﴿إِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ لَمْ یَلِدْ وَلَمْ یُوْلَدْ وَلَمْ یَکُنْ لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ﴾

Regarding Documents

✿ As for official documents (certificates, ID card, etc.), you should consult a legal professional (lawyer) and make the correction under their guidance.

Hādhā mā ʿindī wallāhu aʿlam bis-ṣawāb.
