What is the correct way of asking Allah ﷻ in duʿāʾ? In what manner did the Prophet ﷺ make duʿāʾ so that it would have effect and be accepted?
❖ The Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
The authentic and Sunnah way of making duʿāʾ is the manner transmitted from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the books of ḥadīth and tafsīr.
✿ Different Situations of Duʿāʾ from the Prophet ﷺ
✔ With raised hands in some instances, such as:
◈ Duʿāʾ for rain (ṣalāt al-istisqāʾ)
◈ Duʿāʾ of qunūt al-nāzilah
◈ Duʿāʾ in the graveyard
◈ Duʿāʾ when someone specifically requested it
✔ Without raising hands in other situations, such as:
◈ Duʿāʾ in ṣalāh (except qunūt al-nāzilah)
◈ Duʿāʾ of qunūt al-witr
◈ Duʿāʾ after obligatory prayers

✿ Conditions for the Acceptance of Duʿāʾ
Books of ḥadīth and collections of supplications mention several conditions for duʿāʾ to be accepted, such as:
① Food and clothing must be ḥalāl
② The duʿāʾ must not contain sinful requests or severing of family ties
③ The heart should not be heedless at the time of duʿāʾ
④ The supplicant should not despair of Allah’s acceptance
