Correct Timing for Sunnah Prayers Before and After Fard Salah

Timing of Sunnah Prayers Before and After the Fard Salah

Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

Question:
What is the time frame for the Sunnah Mu’akkadah (emphasized Sunnah) prayers before the Fard Salah? Some scholars say the time for Sunnah prayers before and after the Fard exists only within the time of that Fard prayer. Others say that once the Fard prayer is offered, the time for the first Sunnah ends. What is the correct and strongest view?

Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd:

✅ The correct and strongest view is:

📌 Time for the first Sunnahs (before Fard):

◈ Starts from the beginning of the time for the Fard prayer until the Fard is performed.
◈ For example:
❀ The time for the first Sunnahs of Ẓuhr begins from the Adhān of Ẓuhr (i.e., after the sun has passed its zenith) and lasts until the Ẓuhr Fard prayer is offered.

📌 Time for the Sunnahs after Fard:
◈ Starts immediately after the Fard prayer and continues until the end of the prescribed time for that prayer.

🕒 If the time for the first Sunnahs passes without an excuse:
◈ It is permissible to make them up after the Fard prayer.
◈ However, if the delay was without any valid excuse and the time ended:
❀ In such a case, performing them afterward will have no benefit.

❗ Why?
◈ According to the correct opinion:
❀ Any act of worship with a clearly fixed time,
❀ if its time is deliberately wasted without a Sharʿī excuse,
❀ then performing it afterward is neither valid nor accepted.
