Correct Time for Stoning the Jamarat: Shariah Clarification for Eid and the Days of Tashriq
Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām
◈ The stoning of Jamrat al-ʿAqabah is performed on the Day of Eid (10th Dhul-Hijjah).
◈ For healthy and strong pilgrims, the time begins from sunrise on Eid day.
◈ For weak individuals, women, and children who cannot bear the crowd, the time begins from the last part of the night before Eid.
◈ Asmāʾ (RA) would wait for the moon to set on the night of Eid.
◈ When the moon had set, she would leave Muzdalifah for Mina and perform the stoning of Jamrat al-ʿAqabah.
◈ On the Day of Eid, stoning can be performed until sunset.
◈ If the crowd is heavy or the pilgrim is far from the Jamarāt, delaying stoning until the night is permissible.
◈ However, it is not allowed to delay the stoning until after Fajr of the 11th Dhul-Hijjah.
During Ayyām al-Tashrīq (11th, 12th, and 13th Dhul-Hijjah), the time for stoning is:
◈ From Zawal (start of Dhuhr time) until midnight.
◈ If there is difficulty or overcrowding, it may be done until Fajr without harm.
◈ On the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah, stoning before Zawal is not permissible.
◈ The evidence is the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:
«ٔخُذُوا عني مَنَاسِككُمْ»
“Learn your rites of Hajj from me.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-ʿIlm, Ḥadīth: 83; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Ḥadīth: 1297)
◈ The Prophet ﷺ delayed stoning until Zawal, even though that time was extremely hot.
◈ He did not perform stoning in the cooler morning hours, which would have been easier.
◈ This indicates that stoning before Zawal is not allowed.
◈ The Prophet ﷺ performed stoning right after Zawal and before the Dhuhr prayer.
◈ If stoning before Zawal was allowed, he would have done it earlier so that Dhuhr could be prayed at its earliest time, which is generally preferred.
◈ All evidences show that during the Days of Tashriq (11th, 12th, and 13th Dhul-Hijjah), stoning before Zawal is not permissible.
