Correct Place for Supplicating for the Deceased in Islam

Supplication for the Deceased: At the Grave or at Home? Correct Sharʿi Guidance

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Funerary Issues, Volume 1, Page 268

❖ Question

Is it better to supplicate for the forgiveness of the deceased at the grave, or is it better to do so at home or in the mosque? In other words, at which place is the supplication more likely to be accepted?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Supplication for the deceased can be made from any place—whether at home, in the mosque, or at the grave. All are permissible. Allāh Himself has promised the acceptance of supplication:

﴿أُجِيبُ دَعۡوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِۖ﴾
(Sūrat al-Baqarah, 2:186)
“I answer the supplication of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.”

Thus, supplication is not bound to any particular place. What matters is sincerity, for a sincere duʿāʾ may be accepted anywhere.

✿ Condition for Istighfār: The Deceased Must Be Muslim

It is essential that supplication for forgiveness be made only for a Muslim deceased. Supplication for a disbeliever or polytheist is not permissible. Allāh says:

﴿مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَن يَسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ لِلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ﴾
(Sūrat at-Tawbah, 9:113)
“It is not befitting for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists.”

✿ No Need to Travel Specifically for Graves

Specifically traveling to supplicate at graves is not prescribed in Sharīʿah. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:

«لاَ تُشَدُّ الرِّحَالُ إِلاَّ إِلٰی ثَلاَثَةِ مَسَاجِدَ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim – Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Bāb Faḍl al-Masājid ath-Thalāthah)
“No journey should be undertaken except to three mosques.”

This means that undertaking a journey for acts of worship or duʿāʾ is legislated only for Masjid al-Ḥarām, Masjid an-Nabawī, and Masjid al-Aqṣā. Traveling specifically to graves for supplication is not proven from the Sunnah.

✿ Supplication Should Not Be Restricted by Specific Times or Methods

The Prophet ﷺ rejected every act of worship not legislated in Sharīʿah. To specify duʿāʾ with a particular time, form, or method not sanctioned is an innovation. The Prophet ﷺ said:

«مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلاً لَیْسَ عَلَیْهِ أَمْرُنَا فَهُوَ رَدٌّ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
“Whoever does an act which is not in accordance with our matter (the Sharīʿah), it will be rejected.”

❖ Summary
