When Should the Index Finger Be Moved During Tashahhud? Complete Guidance
Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām
The hadith states:
"He ﷺ would move it while supplicating with it."
(Al-Fatḥ al-Rabbānī 3/147, Sunan al-Nasāʾī 890)
This indicates that the movement is tied to the act of duʿāʾ.
When the Prophet ﷺ asked: "Have I conveyed?", the companions replied: "Yes."
He then raised his finger to the sky and said:
"O Allah, bear witness" — repeating it three times.
(Muslim 1218)
Movement is made at each point of supplication. These include:
Conclusion:
The Sunnah is to move the index finger only during supplication within tashahhud, not continuously from start to end.

Ruling on Continuous Movement Throughout Tashahhud
- Moving the index finger continuously from the beginning to the end of the tashahhud is not correct according to the Sunnah.
- The correct method is to move the finger only at the times of supplication during the tashahhud.
Prophetic Guidance
The hadith states:

This indicates that the movement is tied to the act of duʿāʾ.
Reason for Pointing Upwards
- Supplication is made to Allah, who is above the heavens.
- Qur’anic evidence: Surah al-Mulk (67:16–17) warns about the One above the heavens.
- The Prophet ﷺ said:
(Bukhari 4351, Muslim 1064) — “Do you not trust me when I am the trustee of the One in the heaven?”
Example from the Farewell Sermon
When the Prophet ﷺ asked: "Have I conveyed?", the companions replied: "Yes."
He then raised his finger to the sky and said:
"O Allah, bear witness" — repeating it three times.
