❀ The Question

What is the correct method of supplicating to Allah? How did the Prophet ﷺ make du‘a so that it had effect and was accepted?

❀ The Answer

Alhamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Rasoolillah, amma ba‘d!

The correct way of supplicating to Allah ﷻ is the way narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the books of hadith and tafsir.

✿ Raising of Hands in Du‘a

In some supplications, the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands, such as:

✔ Supplication for rain (istisqa’)
✔ Du‘a of Qunoot Nazilah
✔ Du‘a in the graveyard
✔ Du‘a upon someone’s request

In some supplications, there is no evidence that the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands, such as:

✘ Du‘a in Salah other than Qunoot Nazilah
✘ Du‘a of Qunoot al-Witr
✘ Du‘a after the obligatory prayers
✘ Du‘a when entering or leaving the toilet
✘ Du‘a when entering or leaving the masjid
✘ Du‘a when entering or leaving the house
✘ Du‘a when approaching one’s wife

✿ Conditions for the Acceptance of Du‘a

Books of hadith and collections of supplications mention the following conditions:

① The food and clothing of the supplicant must be halal.
② The supplication must not involve sin or severing ties of kinship.
③ The heart must not be heedless at the time of supplication.
④ The supplicant must not be despairing of Allah’s acceptance.
