Correct Method of Combining Maghrib and Isha Prayers

❖ The Shari'ah-Compliant Method of Combining Maghrib and Isha Prayers ❖

❖ Question:

What is the correct method of performing Maghrib and Isha prayers together? What is the procedure regarding the Sunnah prayers after the obligatory (fard) ones?

❖ Answer by: Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir ḥafiẓahullāh

◈ Permission to Combine Prayers:

The permission to combine prayers is granted only in the state of travel, and this combining is of two types:

Jam‘ Taqdīm (Early Combination):
Performing the ‘Asr prayer during the time of Ẓuhr, and the ‘Ishā’ prayer during the time of Maghrib.

Jam‘ Ta’khīr (Delayed Combination):
Performing the Ẓuhr prayer during the time of ‘Asr, and the Maghrib prayer during the time of ‘Ishā’.

◈ Ruling Regarding Sunnah Mu’akkadah During Travel:

✔ In the state of travel, performing Sunnah Mu’akkadah is not established.

✔ It is authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ that only the Sunnahs of Fajr and Witr prayer were performed during travel.

◈ Combining Prayers in a Non-Travel State (Ḥaḍar):

✔ In ḥaḍar (normal, non-travel condition), special attention must be given to the performance of Sunnah prayers.

✔ According to a narration from Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, combining prayers in ḥaḍar is permissible occasionally due to genuine necessity, but it should not be made a regular practice.

◈ Sequence of Sunnah Prayers:

If Maghrib and ‘Ishā’ are combined during ḥaḍar:

① Perform the Sunnahs of Maghrib first.

② Then perform the Fard of ‘Ishā’.

✔ If the Sunnah prayers cannot be performed immediately, they may be offered later as qaḍā (make-up).
