Correct Method for a Christian to Embrace Islam

❖ Question:

If a Christian accepts the call to Islam, how should the process of entering into Islam be carried out?

❖ Answer:

The procedure for bringing a Christian into Islam can be completed through the following steps:

✿ ① Presence of Witnesses

◈ It is recommended that some trustworthy individuals be present who are either known to you or to the Christian individual, or that the process takes place in the presence of a respected scholar or shaykh.
◈ This ensures that the conversion is free from coercion, and everyone can confidently affirm the sincerity of the decision.

✿ ② Declaration of Willingness

◈ The person must openly declare that they are accepting Islam of their own free will, without any pressure or compulsion.
◈ This is the approach followed by scholars such as Dr. Zakir Naik ḥafiẓahullāh, who ensures the person’s consent is clearly affirmed before proceeding.

✿ ③ Performing Ghusl (Ritual Bath)

◈ It is recommended, though not obligatory, for the person to perform Ghusl (ritual bath) before officially entering Islam, as a symbol of purification.

✿ ④ Recitation of the Shahādah (Testimony of Faith)

After confirming willingness, the person should be guided to recite:

"أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله و أشهد أن محمداً رسول الله"
"Ashhadu an lā ilāha illallāh wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan Rasūlullāh"
"I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah."

✿ ⑤ Teaching of Basic Islamic Rulings

◈ If appropriate, the new Muslim should be taught the fundamental rulings of Islam, such as belief in Allah, prayer, cleanliness, and other essential practices, so they can begin to build their understanding of the religion from the ground up.

✿ Conclusion ✿

Bringing a Christian into Islam involves sincerity, clarity, and proper guidance, ensuring the process is in accordance with Islamic principles and conducted respectfully and correctly.
