The Prescribed Interval Between Each Two Takbīrs in Eid Prayer
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
In the Eid prayer, it is recommended that there should be a measured pause between each two additional Takbīrs (i.e., beyond the opening Takbīr). This pause is to be long enough to allow for the recitation of a moderate-length phrase or verse, reflecting tranquility and mindfulness.
"Between each two Takbīrs, there should be a pause equal to the time it takes to say a phrase (kalimah).”
[Ṭabarānī in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid: 2/205 — This narration is also cited by Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar in Talkhīṣ al-Ḥabīr: 2/85]
This indicates a brief but thoughtful pause that gives the worshiper time to reflect, remain calm, and not rush through the takbīrs.
✔ It is Sunnah to pause briefly between the additional takbīrs of the Eid prayer.
✔ The pause should be approximately the length of a moderate statement or verse.
✔ This practice is traced back to ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (رضي الله عنه) in both word and deed.
