Constructing Cemented Graves

Authored by: Sheikh Mubashar Ahmad Rabbani (Hafizahullah)

Question:

In contemporary times, constructing cemented graves has become a common practice. Is this permissible from an Islamic perspective?

Answer:

Constructing cemented graves is strictly prohibited in Islam and goes against the explicit instructions of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ان يجصص القبر، وان يقعد عليه، وان يبنى عليه

(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Jana’iz: Bab al-Nahi ‘an Tajsis al-Qabr [Hadith No. 970]; Sunan Abu Dawood [3225])

Translation:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade plastering graves, sitting on them, and building structures over them."

Ruling from the Hadith

From this authentic Hadith, it is evident that:
① Constructing cemented graves (tajsis) is prohibited.
② Building structures or monuments over graves is impermissible.
③ Sitting on graves is also forbidden.

Therefore, constructing cemented graves is both impermissible and against Islamic teachings.
