⭑ The Comprehensiveness of Islam and the Conspiracy to Reduce It to a Mere Religion ⭑
Written by: Hamid Kamaluddin
In Islam, the term "Deen" represents a comprehensive system that encompasses:
➤ Intentions of the heart
➤ Physical acts of worship
➤ Daily affairs and interactions
➤ Social relationships
➤ Politics, economy, and state governance
This concept is rooted solely in the worship of Allah, with absolute avoidance of servitude to anything besides Him. This complete submission to Allah is called "Islam".
Throughout the scholarly tradition of Islam, Deen has always been presented as a complete way of life. Whether in books of Fiqh and Hadith or in the historical resources of the Muslim Ummah, Deen is consistently understood as a system that governs all dimensions of life. For instance:
✔ Fath al-Qadeer – A renowned text in Hanafi Fiqh
✔ Sahih Muslim – A Hadith collection that covers both acts of worship and state/legal matters
These resources treat Deen not merely as ritual but as a governing system for human life.
In contrast, the concept of "Madhhab" (though originally an Arabic word) has, in modern times, come to reflect the English term "religion". This interpretation:
➤ Limits Islam to spirituality, personal morality, rituals, and individual acts of worship
➤ Excludes collective and state matters from the realm of religion
This narrow understanding is being deliberately promoted under the influence of secularism and globalization.
Secularists are propagating the idea that religion should be limited to personal worship, while politics, economics, and law must be governed by secular principles. This is a coordinated global agenda wherein:
➤ Islam is redefined as a private belief system with no public role
➤ All societal, political, and legal aspects are assigned to secular ideologies
➤ Muslims are expected to relinquish their comprehensive Deen and embrace secularism as the governing system
Under the agenda of globalization, Muslims are being told:
➤ You may keep Islam as a religion,
➤ But you must accept secularism in politics, law, and governance
➤ The rich Islamic scholarly tradition of Fiqh, Hadith, and legal thought must be erased from memory,
➤ So that future generations grow up ignorant of Islam’s complete vision of life
Islamic scholarship has always defended the comprehensive nature of Deen. These academic treasures include guidance not only on personal rituals but also:
➤ Governance
➤ Economic systems
➤ Political laws
➤ Judicial rulings
Secularism views these Islamic sciences as threats, thus aims to:
➤ Eliminate them, or
➤ Raise suspicion about their authenticity,
So the coming generations remain detached from the holistic understanding of Islam.
➤ Religion under Secularism:
Secularism insists that state matters be guided not by religion, but by “common human values”—which are essentially secular laws.
➤ Islam is allowed only as ritual, while its governance and legal systems are rejected.
Muslims are thus being asked to accept Islam as a religion, but to accept secularism as their Deen.
Islam has always claimed to be a complete system—social, political, and governmental. Muslims historically recognized it as a comprehensive code of life.
Today, however, secular forces seek to dismantle this holistic view.
This battle has now moved from the public domain into the minds of Muslims. The strategy is to gradually shift the understanding of Islam from a Deen to a mere religion.
➤ Academic Defense of Deen:
Muslims must turn to their scholarly heritage to reaffirm that Islam is a complete system.
Understanding and internalizing the holistic guidance in Fiqh and Hadith is essential to counter the restricted secular narrative.
➤ Implementing Deen in Public Life:
Islam is not just a spiritual practice—it is a governing system that brings politics, economy, and law under the sovereignty of Allah.
Muslims must become aware of this reality and strive for its implementation.
➤ Awakening the Ummah:
It is imperative to make Muslims realize that under secularism, they are only allowed personal rituals, while Islam’s role in governance is being eliminated.
The Ummah must be alerted and educated to resist this manipulation and hold fast to the true concept of Deen.
This is not just a political or intellectual dispute—it is a battle between two worldviews:
➤ Accepting Islam as a comprehensive Deen, or
➤ Reducing it to a limited religion
Secular powers aim to detach Muslims from their Deen, while the survival and dignity of the Ummah depend on faith in the holistic nature of Islam and striving for its implementation.

❖ The Expansive Meaning of Deen in Islam
In Islam, the term "Deen" represents a comprehensive system that encompasses:
➤ Intentions of the heart
➤ Physical acts of worship
➤ Daily affairs and interactions
➤ Social relationships
➤ Politics, economy, and state governance
This concept is rooted solely in the worship of Allah, with absolute avoidance of servitude to anything besides Him. This complete submission to Allah is called "Islam".

✔ Fath al-Qadeer – A renowned text in Hanafi Fiqh
✔ Sahih Muslim – A Hadith collection that covers both acts of worship and state/legal matters
These resources treat Deen not merely as ritual but as a governing system for human life.
✿ The Restricted Notion of "Religion"
In contrast, the concept of "Madhhab" (though originally an Arabic word) has, in modern times, come to reflect the English term "religion". This interpretation:
➤ Limits Islam to spirituality, personal morality, rituals, and individual acts of worship
➤ Excludes collective and state matters from the realm of religion
This narrow understanding is being deliberately promoted under the influence of secularism and globalization.
◈ Secularism’s Agenda: Confining Islam to “Religion”
Secularists are propagating the idea that religion should be limited to personal worship, while politics, economics, and law must be governed by secular principles. This is a coordinated global agenda wherein:
➤ Islam is redefined as a private belief system with no public role
➤ All societal, political, and legal aspects are assigned to secular ideologies
➤ Muslims are expected to relinquish their comprehensive Deen and embrace secularism as the governing system
✔ Globalization and the Demands of Secularism
Under the agenda of globalization, Muslims are being told:
➤ You may keep Islam as a religion,
➤ But you must accept secularism in politics, law, and governance
➤ The rich Islamic scholarly tradition of Fiqh, Hadith, and legal thought must be erased from memory,
➤ So that future generations grow up ignorant of Islam’s complete vision of life
✦ The Assault on Islamic Knowledge and Jurisprudence
Islamic scholarship has always defended the comprehensive nature of Deen. These academic treasures include guidance not only on personal rituals but also:
➤ Governance
➤ Economic systems
➤ Political laws
➤ Judicial rulings
Secularism views these Islamic sciences as threats, thus aims to:
➤ Eliminate them, or
➤ Raise suspicion about their authenticity,
So the coming generations remain detached from the holistic understanding of Islam.
❖ The Danger of Accepting a Limited Definition of Deen
➤ Religion under Secularism:
Secularism insists that state matters be guided not by religion, but by “common human values”—which are essentially secular laws.
➤ Islam is allowed only as ritual, while its governance and legal systems are rejected.
Muslims are thus being asked to accept Islam as a religion, but to accept secularism as their Deen.
❀ The War Against the Comprehensiveness of Islam
Islam has always claimed to be a complete system—social, political, and governmental. Muslims historically recognized it as a comprehensive code of life.
Today, however, secular forces seek to dismantle this holistic view.
This battle has now moved from the public domain into the minds of Muslims. The strategy is to gradually shift the understanding of Islam from a Deen to a mere religion.
✔ Muslim Response: Defending the Comprehensive Nature of Deen
❖ Conclusion
This is not just a political or intellectual dispute—it is a battle between two worldviews:
➤ Accepting Islam as a comprehensive Deen, or
➤ Reducing it to a limited religion
Secular powers aim to detach Muslims from their Deen, while the survival and dignity of the Ummah depend on faith in the holistic nature of Islam and striving for its implementation.
