Ijma’ of the Ummah
The belief in the finality of Prophethood is a universally agreed-upon doctrine among Muslims. Throughout Islamic history, not a single true Muslim has ever claimed that prophethood could continue after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The entire Ummah has always maintained that the Shariah brought by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the last and final divine law, and that he is the Seal of all Prophets. No new Prophet will come after him, nor will any new revelation be sent down.
This belief is a foundational part of Islam. After the Prophet ﷺ, there will be no new prophet, and the only thing to follow is the Day of Judgment. However, as foretold by the Prophet ﷺ, there will be about thirty false claimants to prophethood. These impostors will be clearly recognized by the Muslim Ummah as liars, and their falsehood will not require elaborate refutation—because the truth of "Khatm-e-Nubuwwah" (finality of Prophethood) is deeply ingrained in the nature and perception of every sincere Muslim. Even without scholarly proofs, a believer cannot imagine anyone being accepted as a prophet after Muhammad ﷺ.
Unanimous Testimonies of Scholars
That is why the scholars of all eras have emphasized that:
❖ The Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ can never collectively agree upon misguidance. Their consensus (ijma’) is a valid source of Islamic legislation.
❖ The words of the Prophet ﷺ — "There is no Prophet after me" — have always been understood by the scholars of every generation as a clear, conclusive declaration of the end of Prophethood.
❖ The belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah has consistently been that Prophet ‘Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him), when he returns near the end of times, will not come as a new prophet, but as a follower of Muhammad ﷺ and his Shariah.
❖ All Islamic scholars are unanimous in stating that anyone who believes in the possibility of prophethood after Muhammad ﷺ is a disbeliever.
The Cessation of Revelation
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s demise marked the permanent end of divine revelation. This is a matter of consensus and is among the known essentials of Islam. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ also expressed this belief explicitly:
❖ ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) said, “Revelation has ended.”
❖ Umm Ayman (رضي الله عنها) cried after the Prophet’s death, not only out of grief but because the connection between the heavens and the earth—revelation—was now severed.
Perfection of the Religion
Islam is a complete and perfect religion. There is no room for additions or deletions. Allah declared in the Qur’an:
"This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion."
(Surah al-Ma'idah: 3)
This divine announcement affirms that the door of new legislation and new prophethood is eternally closed. The religion has reached its completion with Muhammad ﷺ, and any claim to prophethood after him is a falsehood, a deviation, and an act of disbelief.
Final Reminder
O followers of the final Prophet! Beware of impostors and deceivers. No matter how sweet their words or how charming their tactics, they cannot change the truth that has been embedded in the hearts of believers. Every child of this Ummah is born upon the innate belief that if asked, “Who is your Prophet?”, his spontaneous answer will be:
“There is no Prophet after Muhammad ﷺ.”
