The Ruling on Wiping Over Leather Socks (Khuffayn)

Source: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

Question:

What is the ruling on wiping over leather socks (khuffayn)?

Answer:

Wiping over leather socks is permissible and legislated. It is supported by mutawatir Ahadith and the consensus of the Ummah.

❀ Hafiz Ibn Hajar رحمه الله (852 AH) said:
“A large group of Hadith masters have explicitly stated that the narrations regarding wiping over the leather socks are mutawatir.”
(Fath al-Bari: 1/306)

❀ Imam Abu Ja‘far Qutaybah ibn Sa‘id رحمه الله (240 AH) said:
“It is the unanimous belief of the Imams of Islam and Ahl al-Sunnah that wiping over the leather socks is permissible.”
(Shi‘ar Ashab al-Hadith by al-Hakim al-Kabir, p. 30, with an authentic chain)

❀ Imam Ibn Battal رحمه الله (449 AH) said:
“The scholars are unanimously agreed on the permissibility of wiping over the leather socks.”
(Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari: 1/304)

❀ Imam Ibn Qattan al-Fasi رحمه الله (628 AH) said:
“Only an innovator outside the fold of the Muslim community denies the permissibility of wiping over the leather socks. There is no difference on this issue between the scholars of Hijaz and Iraq, the jurists, and the Hadith scholars. A large body of scholars holds this view, and it is impossible for them to agree upon falsehood. They include the majority of the Companions, the Tabi‘in, and the jurists of the Muslims. The consensus of the scholars is on its permissibility.”
(al-Iqna‘ fi Masā’il al-Ijma‘: 1/88)
