Condition of Dust for Tayammum and Ruling on Performing Tayammum on Walls or Floors

Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

Is Dust a Condition for Tayammum?

According to the stronger and correct opinion, it is not a condition that the soil used for tayammum must have visible dust on it.

  • If a person performs tayammum on the ground, whether there is dust or not, the tayammum will be valid.
  • Even if the ground is damp due to rain, striking the hands on it and wiping the face and hands will still be correct.

Evidence from the Qur’an

Allah ﷻ says:

﴿فَتَيَمَّموا صَعيدًا طَيِّبًا فَامسَحوا بِوُجوهِكُم وَأَيديكُم مِنهُ﴾
"Then perform tayammum with clean earth and wipe your faces and your hands from it."
[Al-Ma’idah: 6]

The word ﴿مِنْهُ﴾ here is for ابتداء الغاية (indicating the starting point), not تبعیض (partitive sense).

  • Meaning: The tayammum should start from the clean earth, not that a portion of it (dust) must necessarily stick to the hands.

Evidence from Hadith

It is authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ:

Struck the ground with his hands, blew into them, then wiped his face and hands.
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Tayammum, Bab al-Tayammum Hal Yanfukh Fihima, Hadith: 338]

Tayammum on Walls and Floors

  • If a wall or floor is made of soil, stone, brick, or similar materials, tayammum is valid even without dust.
  • If they are covered with wood or tiles but have dust, tayammum is also valid.
  • If they have no dust and are not made of earthen material, tayammum is not valid.

✅ Conclusion: Tayammum is valid on any pure earthly material — dust is not a necessary condition.
