Common Bid'ah Practices That Invalidate the Fast

๐Ÿšซ Unlawful Methods of Fasting in Light of the Qur'an and Hadith ๐Ÿšซ
โœ Authored by: Anila Atiq Sahiba

Introduction

Fasting is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam, whose rulings have been clearly outlined by Allah ๏ทป and His Messenger ๏ทบ. Any method that contradicts the Qur'an, Hadith, or the consensus of the Companions is considered an innovation (ุจุฏุนุช) and unacceptable. Adopting any un-Islamic or unauthorized method of fasting is prohibited and invalid.

๐Ÿ“– Rejection of Un-Islamic Methods in Light of the Qur'an

Correct Intention and Timing

(Al-Baqarah: 185)
"So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it."

๐Ÿ”น This verse clarifies that a valid fast is one kept in the month of Ramadan and in accordance with Islamic guidelines, not through self-invented methods.

Proper Beginning and Ending of the Fast

(Al-Baqarah: 187)
"And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the night."

๐Ÿ”น This verse clearly specifies that fasting begins at Fajr and ends at Maghrib. Any deviation is misguidance.

๐Ÿ“œ Rejection of Un-Islamic Methods in Light of the Hadith

Rejection of Self-Invented Acts of Worship

The Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ said:
(Bukhari: 2697, Muslim: 1718)
"Whoever introduces into this matter of ours [i.e., Islam] that which is not from itโ€”it is rejected."

๐Ÿ”น This Hadith emphasizes that any innovation in religion is unacceptable and to be rejected.

Avoiding Un-Islamic Extremes

Some companions intended to practice extreme forms of worship. The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
(Bukhari: 5063, Muslim: 1401)
"By Allah, I am the most God-fearing among you, yet I fast and break my fast, I pray and rest, and I marry women. So whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me."

๐Ÿ”น This Hadith demonstrates that extremism in worship is discouraged and following the Sunnah of the Prophet ๏ทบ is the only valid way.

๐Ÿ“š Rejection of Unlawful Fasting Based on the Consensus of the Companions

Fasting Without Suhoor

The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
(Bukhari: 1923, Muslim: 1095)
"Take Suhoor, for indeed there is blessing in Suhoor."

๐Ÿ”น Those who fast without Suhoor thinking it to be more pious are in error, as the Prophet ๏ทบ encouraged Suhoor.

โ‘ก Continuous (Unbroken) Fasting โ€“ Sawm al-Wisฤl

Some people wished to fast continuously without breaking their fast at sunset. The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
(Bukhari: 1965, Muslim: 1102)
"Do not observe continuous fasting (without breaking it at Maghrib)."

๐Ÿ”น This Hadith proves that undue hardship and religious extremism are discouraged.

โš  Common Un-Islamic and Innovative Fasting Practices

Fasting on Unlawful Days

Fasting specifically on the death anniversary of a saint (Urs)
Fasting the entire month of Rajab without any authentic Hadith

Delaying Iftar Unlawfully

โ€ Some believe that delaying Iftar after Maghrib is more virtuous, whereas the Prophet ๏ทบ said:
(Bukhari: 1957, Muslim: 1098)
"People will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten in breaking the fast."

Claiming Intention Alone is Enough Without Action

Some claim, "We made the intention in our hearts, there's no need to stop eating or drinking," while in reality, refraining from food and drink is an essential component of fasting.

โœ… Conclusion

Fasting is a fundamental pillar of Islam, and its rulings are clearly defined through the Qurโ€™an, Hadith, and the Consensus of the Companions. Introducing new methods or innovations into this act of worship is strictly prohibited. Muslims must adhere strictly to the Sunnah of the Prophet ๏ทบ and avoid all forms of innovation and false practices.
