❖ Command, Virtue, and Method of Sending Salat and Salam upon the Prophet ﷺ

❀ The Question
What is Salat and Salam (Durud) upon the Prophet ﷺ? What did the Prophet ﷺ instruct regarding it?
❀ The Answer
Alhamdulillah, was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Rasoolillah, amma ba‘d!
✿ Meaning of Durud and Salam
Sending Durud and Salam means to supplicate to Allah ﷻ for mercy and peace upon the Prophet ﷺ.
The best and most virtuous way is to recite the words and supplications authentically transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ himself.
✿ Qur’anic Command
Allah ﷻ says:
﴿إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِيِّۚ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ صَلُّواْ عَلَيۡهِ وَسَلِّمُواْ تَسۡلِيمًا﴾
(al-Ahzab: 56)
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe! Send blessings upon him and send peace abundantly.”
✿ The Companions’ Question and the Prophet’s ﷺ Response
When the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
“O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You have taught us how to give Salam to you, now tell us how to send Salat (Durud) upon you.”
The Prophet ﷺ taught them the Durud Ibrahim, the same wording recited in Salah.

✿ The Great Reward of Sending Durud
In Sunan al-Nasa’i, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever sends one Salat (Durud) upon me, Allah sends ten Salawat (mercies) upon him.”
(Sunan al-Nasa’i, sanad sahih; Mishkat, Kitab al-Salat, Bab al-Salat ‘ala al-Nabi ﷺ wa Fadlaha, al-Fasl al-Thani)
❀ Conclusion
Thus, sending Salat and Salam upon the Prophet ﷺ is:
✔ An explicit command of Allah ﷻ
✔ A practice of the angels
✔ A distinction of the believers
Its virtues are countless, and its reward is immense.
