Fatwa by: Shaykh Ibn Jibreen (may Allah protect him)
Question:
If a woman wishes to perform Qurbani (sacrifice), is she required not to comb her hair? If she refrains from combing for ten days, it becomes very difficult for her. What is the ruling in this regard?
Answer:
A Sahih (authentic) Hadith is reported from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"When the ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah) begin, and one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, then he should not touch his hair or skin (i.e., by cutting or removing anything)."
[Narrated by An-Nasa'i in Kitab al-Adahi, Chapter 1, and Ad-Darimi in Kitab al-Adahi, Chapter 1]
In another narration from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), it is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"When you see the crescent moon of Dhul-Hijjah, and any one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, he should refrain from cutting his hair and nails."
[Narrated by Muslim in Kitab al-Adahi, Chapter 7]
The scholars explain that this ruling includes shaving, cutting, plucking, or removing hair by any means, including the use of powder or other hair removal methods; all of these actions are prohibited. However, combing or styling the hair does not fall under this prohibition. Similarly, washing the hair is also not forbidden. If some hair falls out unintentionally while combing, there is no harm in it. In light of these clarifications, it is permissible for a woman to comb her hair if necessary. This ruling applies regardless of whether the sacrifice is voluntary or obligatory.
