◈ Causes of Allah’s Punishment and Protection from It in Light of the Qur’an and Hadith ◈
By: Qari Usama bin Abdussalam
Allah’s punishment descends upon those who persist in disobedience, engage in sin, and refuse to repent. Yet, due to His mercy, Allah does not hasten punishment; He gives repeated opportunities for repentance and reform. However, when a community becomes immersed in injustice, rebellion, and transgression, divine punishment becomes inevitable.
Nations who were destroyed by Allah shared a common trait—they rejected the signs of Allah and denied His prophets.
(Surah Hud, 11:101)
"We did not wrong them; rather, they wronged themselves."
Associating partners with Allah (shirk) is the gravest sin and draws severe punishment.
(Surah An-Nisa’, 4:48)
"Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives whatever is less than that for whom He wills."
People who oppress others and spread corruption on earth become deserving of Allah’s wrath.
(Surah Al-Isra’, 17:16)
"And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent people, but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word is justified against it, and We destroy it utterly."
Those who continuously disobey Allah and indulge in sins become subject to divine punishment.
(Surah Al-A‘rāf, 7:136)
"So We took vengeance upon them and drowned them in the sea because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them."
The people of Prophet Shu‘ayb (علیه السلام) were destroyed for fraud in trade, and the same punishment threatens those who cheat today.
(Surah Al-Muṭaffifīn, 83:1)
"Woe to those who give less [in measure and weight]."
The Prophet ﷺ warned that openly committing sins leads to unique punishments never seen before.
"إِذَا ظَهَرَتِ الْفَاحِشَةُ..."
(Ibn Mājah)
"When immorality becomes widespread in a people, Allah sends upon them punishments not seen among their predecessors."
When injustice becomes rampant and none oppose it, divine punishment is imminent.
"إِذَا رَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَظْلِمُونَ..."
(Tirmidhī)
"When you see people committing injustice and no one objects, know that Allah has permitted their destruction."
Failing to pay zakāt and hoarding wealth invites droughts and economic hardship.
"مَا مَنَعَ قَوْمٌ الزَّكَاةَ..."
(Ṭabarānī)
"Any nation that withholds zakāt, Allah afflicts them with famine."
The Qur’an and Hadith make it clear: Allah’s punishment befalls those who reject His commands, commit shirk, perpetuate injustice, and engage in major sins without repentance.
However, Allah’s mercy remains vast. He repeatedly gives opportunities for repentance before punishment is decreed. The only path to salvation from divine wrath is:
✔ Sincere repentance (tawbah)
✔ Turning back to Allah
✔ Consistent adherence to His commands
Through faith, reform, and divine obedience, individuals and societies can be protected from Allah’s punishment.

➎ Those Who Cheat in Trade and Measurement
The people of Prophet Shu‘ayb (علیه السلام) were destroyed for fraud in trade, and the same punishment threatens those who cheat today.
(Surah Al-Muṭaffifīn, 83:1)
"Woe to those who give less [in measure and weight]."
❀ According to the Hadith: When Does Allah’s Punishment Descend? ❀
➊ Open Indulgence in Immorality
The Prophet ﷺ warned that openly committing sins leads to unique punishments never seen before.
"إِذَا ظَهَرَتِ الْفَاحِشَةُ..."
(Ibn Mājah)
"When immorality becomes widespread in a people, Allah sends upon them punishments not seen among their predecessors."
➋ Unchecked Tyranny and Injustice
When injustice becomes rampant and none oppose it, divine punishment is imminent.
"إِذَا رَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَظْلِمُونَ..."
(Tirmidhī)
"When you see people committing injustice and no one objects, know that Allah has permitted their destruction."
➌ Neglecting Zakat
Failing to pay zakāt and hoarding wealth invites droughts and economic hardship.
"مَا مَنَعَ قَوْمٌ الزَّكَاةَ..."
(Ṭabarānī)
"Any nation that withholds zakāt, Allah afflicts them with famine."
✔ Conclusion: The Path to Salvation
The Qur’an and Hadith make it clear: Allah’s punishment befalls those who reject His commands, commit shirk, perpetuate injustice, and engage in major sins without repentance.
