❖ Question:
Can a woman in a state of Janābah (major ritual impurity requiring ghusl) prepare suhoor and observe a fast without taking a bath beforehand?
❖ In Light of the Qur'an
Allah Almighty says:
وَإِن كُنتُمْ جُنُبًا فَاطَّهَّرُوا
(Surah Al-Ma'idah: 6)
"And if you are in a state of Janābah, then purify yourselves (i.e., perform ghusl).”
This verse makes ghusl obligatory for prayer, but it does not prohibit fasting while in a state of Janābah.
❖ In Light of the Hadith
(A) Permissibility of Eating Suhoor and Fasting While in Janābah
➊ The Practice of the Prophet ﷺ
Narrated by Aisha and Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنهما):
"The Prophet ﷺ would be in a state of Janābah at the time of Fajr and would still fast after taking a ghusl."
This Hadith makes it clear that it is permissible to eat suhoor and fast while in Janābah, and ghusl may be performed after Fajr before the prayer.
➋ The Prophet ﷺ Responding to a Companion's Inquiry
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه):
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ: “I wake up in a state of Janābah. Can I still fast?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Yes, I do the same.”
This Hadith confirms that taking ghusl before suhoor is not a condition for the validity of the fast.
(B) Ruling on Eating or Preparing Suhoor in Janābah
➊ Hadith: “The Believer Does Not Become Impure”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“A believer does not become impure.”
This Hadith explains that even though one in Janābah is ritually impure for prayer, they are not physically impure in a way that would prevent eating, drinking, preparing food, or engaging in conversation.
➋ Consensus of the Jurists (Fuqahāʾ)
There is ijmāʿ (consensus) among scholars that:
✔ It is recommended (mustaḥabb) to make wudu before eating or drinking while in a state of Janābah.
✔ However, it is not obligatory.
✔ A woman may prepare suhoor and eat or drink in Janābah, and her fast will still be valid.
✔ She can delay ghusl until after Fajr and then perform the Fajr prayer.
Conclusion
- Prepare and eat suhoor.
- Begin her fast without taking ghusl beforehand.
- Perform ghusl after Fajr before the prayer.
