Ruling on Asking by the Essence of Allah – Is It Permissible?
Taken from: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām
What is the Shar‘ī ruling on asking for something using Allah’s Essence (dhāt) as a means?
For example, some people say:
“I ask you by the Essence of Allah,”
or
“I give you the waseelah (means) of Allah’s Essence – please do this for me.”
Is it permissible to make such a request using this expression?
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh. Ammā ba‘d:
✿ The Essence (Dhāt) of Allah is supremely exalted and majestic.
To use it as a means for trivial or worldly matters is disrespectful and inappropriate.
✿ A believer must maintain reverence and awe towards the greatness and majesty of Allah ﷻ.
✿ Therefore, statements like:
“I ask you by the Essence of Allah,”
“I give you Allah’s Essence as a means to do this,”
— are not suitable and should be avoided altogether.
▪ The names and attributes of Allah ﷻ are sacred and must be used with due respect.
▪ One must not invoke them lightly, especially for mundane or insignificant worldly needs, in conversations with others.
هٰذَا مَا عِندِي، وَاللّٰهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالصَّوَاب
This is what I hold to be correct. And Allah knows best what is right.
