Can Women Use Metal Tools to Remove Unwanted Body Hair?

Source: Fatawa ‘Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1

❀ Question:

Is it permissible for a woman to use scissors, razors, or any iron tool to remove unwanted body hair (e.g., underarm hair)? Please provide a ruling with evidence from the Qur'an and Hadith.

❀ Answer:

Yes, a woman is allowed to use any metal tool, such as scissors, razors, or blades, to remove unwanted body hair from areas like the underarms or below the navel.

This is established from an authentic narration found in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, in which the Prophet ﷺ said:
«عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ... قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: إِذَا دَخَلْتَ لَيْلًا فَلَا تَدْخُلْ عَلَى أَهْلِكَ حَتَّى تَسْتَحِدَّ الْمُغِيبَةُ وَتَمْتَشِطَ الشَّعِثَةُ»
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Book of Nikah, Chapter: Desire for Children, Hadith 5246

"Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When one of you returns home at night, he should not enter upon his wife until the woman whose husband was absent has had time to use a blade (to remove pubic hair) and comb her disheveled hair.'"

This Hadith clearly affirms the permissibility of women using iron tools (such as razors or scissors) for personal hygiene and grooming.
