Authenticity of the Duʿā’: "اللَّهُمَّ اجعلني صَبُورًا وَاجعلني شَكُورًا..."

What is the status of the Hadith containing the supplication:
"اللَّهُمَّ اجعلني صَبُورًا وَاجعلني شَكُورًا..."?
If the Hadith is weak, can this supplication still be made?
This narration is not authentic in terms of its chain (Isnād). A number of scholars of Hadith have declared it weak (ḍaʿīf) or even munkar (denounced).
He narrated this Hadith and said:
“We do not know of anyone who reported it from ʿAbdullah bin Buraydah from his father except ʿUqbah al-Aṣamm, and he is a man from Basrah who is not strong.”
Musnad al-Bazzār: 10/315, Ḥadīth 4439
When asked about this Hadith, he said:
"هَذَا حديثٌ منكرٌ لا يُعرَفُ، وعُقْبةُ ليِّنُ الْحَدِيث"
“This is a munkar (denounced) Hadith, not known. ʿUqbah is weak in Hadith.”

“Narrated by al-Bazzār; in its chain is ʿUqbah bin ʿAbdillah al-Aṣamm, and he is weak.”

Yes — as a personal supplication, it is permissible to say this duʿā’ because:
✔ Its meaning is sound,
✔ The wording is free from any Shari‘ah violation, and
✔ It has been included by scholars in works on supplications and encouragement:
Non-Prophetic supplications (not established from the Sunnah) can be used under 5 conditions:
① Clarity and excellence of wording, suitable for addressing Allah
② Conformity to Arabic linguistic rules
③ Absence of anything prohibited, like shirk or bid‘ah
④ Not restricting the duʿā’ to specific times or places
⑤ Not treating it as Sunnah or obligatory

◈ This Hadith is weak and should not be cited as part of authentic Sunnah.
◈ However, reciting the duʿā’ itself is permissible, as its content is meaningful and Shari‘ah-compliant.

◈ Imam al-Bazzār (رحمه الله):
He narrated this Hadith and said:

❖ Can This Duʿā’ Be Recited Despite Its Weak Chain?
Yes — as a personal supplication, it is permissible to say this duʿā’ because:

- Imam al-Mundhirī in al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb
- Imam al-Shawkānī in Tuḥfat al-Dhākirīn
- Imam al-Manāwī and al-Ṣanʿānī in their commentaries on al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr
✿ Guidelines from Shaykh Bakr Abū Zayd (رحمه الله):
