Can Voluntary Fasts Be Observed Before Making Up Ramadan Fasts?

❀ Voluntary Fasting Before Making Up Missed Fasts ❀

Source:

This article is derived from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, based on the Fatwas of the scholars of the Haramain. The translation was done by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

If a woman still has obligatory fasts to make up from Ramadan, can she observe voluntary fasts such as the fast of the Day of Arafah before fulfilling those missed fasts?

❖ Answer:

One should hasten to make up the missed fasts of Ramadan. Voluntary fasts should not be observed before fulfilling the obligatory make-up fasts. However, if she observes a voluntary fast such as on the Day of Arafah, it does not absolve her of the obligation to make up the missed Ramadan fasts.

If she fasts with the intention that she still owes Ramadan fasts, the fasts will be valid, and in shā’ Allāh, she will be rewarded for them.
