If someone misses the Sunnah rakʿahs of Fajr before congregation, can he perform them after the Farḍ prayer? Please provide evidence from authentic aḥādīth.
It is mentioned in Mishkāt (p. 95) from Qays ibn ʿAmr (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet ﷺ saw a man praying two rakʿahs after the Farḍ of Fajr. When asked, he replied that his two Sunnahs had been missed, so he was making them up. The Prophet ﷺ remained silent.
But Imām al-Tirmidhī said the chain is munqaṭiʿ (disconnected), as Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm did not hear directly from Qays ibn ʿAmr. Thus, it is argued this narration is not proof.
Additionally, in another narration, Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها) asked regarding missed prayers, and the Prophet ﷺ replied “No.” The sanad of this also needs clarification.
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
◈ al-Mustadrak al-Ḥākim
◈ Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān
◈ Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah
◈ Sunan al-Dāraquṭnī
Thus, the narration is ṣaḥīḥ with connected sanad in these works and establishes the permissibility.
◈ If the Sunnahs of Fajr are missed before congregation, they may be prayed after the Farḍ but before sunrise.
◈ This is supported by authentic narrations where the Prophet ﷺ did not object.
◈ If delayed until after sunrise, they will be qaḍāʾ, which is permissible but less virtuous.
◈ Therefore, it is legislated to perform them immediately after Farḍ if missed.

❖ Question:
❖ Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
✦ 1. Time of the Sunnahs of Fajr
- The Sunnahs of Fajr extend until sunrise, just like the Farḍ.
- If performed within this period, they are adāʾ (on time).
- Only if prayed after sunrise will they be qaḍāʾ (make-up).
- And by principle, adāʾ is superior to qaḍāʾ.
✦ 2. Ḥadīth of Qays ibn ʿAmr (رضي الله عنه)
- Indeed, in Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī the narration is munqaṭiʿ.
- But in other sources it is transmitted with a connected chain:
◈ al-Mustadrak al-Ḥākim
◈ Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān
◈ Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah
◈ Sunan al-Dāraquṭnī
Thus, the narration is ṣaḥīḥ with connected sanad in these works and establishes the permissibility.
✦ 3. Example of Ẓuhr Sunnahs Prayed After ʿAṣr
- The Prophet ﷺ once prayed two rakʿahs Sunnah of Ẓuhr after ʿAṣr, as he had been preoccupied earlier.
- This shows that in special circumstances, missed Sunnahs may be prayed later.
✦ 4. Ḥadīth of Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها)
- Umm Salamah asked: “Shall we make up missed prayers?” and the Prophet ﷺ replied: “No.”
- Some scholars graded it ḍaʿīf (weak).
- Others, such as Ibn Bāz (رحمه الله) in his commentary on Fatḥ al-Bārī, considered it ḥasan with a good chain.
- Hence, this narration is not entirely rejected but of secondary strength compared to the narration of Qays ibn ʿAmr.
Conclusion
◈ If the Sunnahs of Fajr are missed before congregation, they may be prayed after the Farḍ but before sunrise.
◈ This is supported by authentic narrations where the Prophet ﷺ did not object.
◈ If delayed until after sunrise, they will be qaḍāʾ, which is permissible but less virtuous.
◈ Therefore, it is legislated to perform them immediately after Farḍ if missed.
