Can Someone Other Than the Khatib Lead the Friday Prayer?

Source: Shumara al-Sunnah, Jhelum

Answer:
Yes, it is permissible for someone other than the Khatib to lead the Friday prayer. However, this is considered contrary to what is preferable, and therefore, it is better to avoid it.

If the Khatib is unable to lead the prayer due to a valid Shar'i excuse, and another person leads the congregation, the Friday prayer will still be valid.

During the time of the Noble Prophet ﷺ and the righteous predecessors (Salaf), it was customary that the Khatib himself would lead the prayer. Hence, following the practice of the Prophet ﷺ and the Salaf is essential.
