Can Satan open doors?
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"Cover your utensils, tie the mouth of your water skins, extinguish the lamps, and close the doors, for indeed, Satan neither unties a water skin, nor opens a door, nor uncovers a utensil. If one of you finds nothing but a piece of wood to cover his utensil, he should place it over it and mention the name of Allah, for indeed, a rat may set the house of its inhabitants on fire."
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 3280; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 2012)
Similarly, Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"When you go to sleep, extinguish your lamps, for Satan guides creatures like this (referring to a rat) towards them, which may burn you."
(Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith No. 5247)
This means that Satan brings a rat, and the rat drags a burning wick, dropping it onto bedding or other flammable materials, which can cause a house fire. Hence, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) instructed that lamps should be extinguished before sleeping.
✔ Covering utensils before leaving them unattended.
✔ Extinguishing household lamps before sleeping.
✔ Closing doors and windows while reciting 'Bismillah'.
✔ Saying 'As-Salamu Alaikum' when entering the house, whether someone is present or not, so that Satan flees from the home.
