Can Satan Assume the Form of an Animal?

Authored by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (حفظه الله)

Answer:
Yes!

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) that indeed the Noble Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

"The donkey, the woman, and the black dog interrupt the prayer."

The narrator says, "I asked Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه): Why specifically the black dog? Why does a red dog not interrupt the prayer?"
He replied, "O my nephew! Just as you have asked me, I too asked the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم), and he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:"

"The black dog is a Shayṭān."

[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Hadith no. 59/2]

It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (رضي الله عنه) that indeed the Noble Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

"The black dog is a Shayṭān."

From these Ahadith, it is evident that Shayṭān can assume the form of an animal.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah writes in his book “Risālat al-Jinn”:

"The Jinn can assume the form of humans and animals; they can take the shapes of snakes, scorpions, and the like. They can also become camels, cows, goats, horses, mules, and donkeys. They can appear among birds and humans as well. However, their most preferred form is that of a black color."
[Risālat al-Jinn, p. 32]
