Can Payment Be Taken for Washing a Deceased Person?

Author: Saudi Fatwa Committee (Lajnah Al-Da'imah)

Ruling on Taking Payment for Washing the Deceased

It is permissible to accept payment for washing a deceased person (ghusl al-mayyit). However, it is considered better and more virtuous for someone to perform this act voluntarily, without seeking monetary compensation, as it aligns with the spirit of selfless service and reward from Allah.

Guidance from Fatawa

The Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Ifta stated in Fatwa No. 7502:

  • Accepting payment for this service is not prohibited and can be arranged if necessary.
  • Voluntary service (fi sabillillah) in washing the deceased is preferred, as it brings greater spiritual rewards and fulfills the communal obligation (fard kifayah).

Key Points

  1. Permissibility of Payment:
    • Payment can be taken when the situation demands it, such as when no one is available to perform the service voluntarily.
  2. Encouragement of Voluntary Action:
    • Performing this act as a charitable service is better, emphasizing the communal responsibility to care for the deceased without material expectations.
  3. Fulfilling Communal Obligation:
    • Washing the deceased is a communal duty, and once fulfilled by some, it lifts the obligation from others in the community.

Conclusion

While taking payment for washing a deceased person is allowed, the preferred practice is to perform it voluntarily as an act of charity and service to the Muslim community.
