Shari‘ah Ruling on Parents Using the Wealth Gifted to Their Children
✒ Fatwa by the Saudi Permanent Committee for Islamic Rulings
It is permissible for parents to utilize the wealth they had previously gifted to their children, provided two conditions are met:
① There is a genuine need for the parents to use that wealth.
② It does not cause harm or loss to the children.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The purest of what you consume is from what you earn, and your children are from your earnings."
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 1358, Sunan Ibn Mājah: 22907)
This ḥadīth implies that a father’s use of his child's wealth—without causing harm and with a valid need—is viewed as use of one’s own extended earnings, especially when done out of necessity.
