Can One Recite the Qur’an After Tayammum Instead of Wudu?

Ruling on Reciting the Qur’an After Tayammum

Question:

A person has undergone surgery and is unable to perform wudu, so he performs tayammum in order to pray. Can he recite the Qur’an with the same tayammum?

Answer by: Shaykh Hafiz Khidr Hayat (حفظه الله)

Yes, he may absolutely recite the Qur’an.

If a person is unable to use water due to illness, surgery, or any valid Shar‘i reason, then he may purify himself through tayammum. According to Islamic law, tayammum serves as a complete substitute for wudu or ghusl, and grants a person the same status of ritual purity as water-based purification.

Hence, once a person has performed tayammum, he is permitted not only to offer salah, but also to engage in all other acts of worship that require ritual purity, including reciting the Noble Qur’an.
