Can a Woman Marry a Jinn? The Reality Behind a Fatwa Attributed to Imam Malik (رحمہ الله)

Authored by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid حفظ اللہ

Abu Uthman Saeed bin Al-Ayas Razi narrates that Hazrat Maqatil mentioned: "I was informed by Saeed bin Abu Dawood that some people wrote a letter to Imam Malik رحمہ الله asking about the permissibility of a woman marrying a jinn. They stated that there was a jinn in their area who had proposed to one of their daughters, expressing his intention to marry her in a lawful manner. Imam Malik رحمہ الله issued a fatwa stating that there was no explicit prohibition in religion against such a union, but he did not encourage it. He explained that it could lead to corruption in Islam, particularly if a woman were found pregnant and, when questioned about the identity of her husband, she claimed that her spouse was a certain jinn."

The chain of narration is weak (ضعيف).

This chain of transmission is weak. Dr. Khalid Al-Haj has discussed this in Haqaiq Al-Iman bil Malaika wal Jinn (p. 238), and Imam Al-Suyuti has referenced it in Luqta Al-Marjan (p. 32). The chain of this story is severely weak due to the following reasons:
  1. Maqatil Ibn Muhammad — According to Imam Al-Daraqutni, he is unknown (Majhool), and his narrations are considered unreliable. Refer to: [Lisan Al-Mizan 83/6].
  2. Saeed bin Dawood — He has narrated multiple unreliable (Munkar) narrations.
