❀ Can a Woman Follow the Mosque Imam While Praying at Home? ❀
✦ Fatwa by: Former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh Ibn Bāz (رحمه الله)
My mother lives near a mosque. A small alley separates the mosque from the house. She hears the Adhān and prayer from the mosque and performs her prayer at home, following the mosque Imam. Is this valid? If it is impermissible, what is the ruling regarding the prayers she has been performing in this way for years? Kindly advise. Jazakum Allahu Khayran.
In the described scenario, a woman cannot follow the mosque Imam while praying at home, unless she can directly see the Imam or some of the congregants.
Only in that case would following the Imam be considered valid.
Otherwise, according to the stronger and preferred opinion, such following is not valid.
As for the prayers your mother has offered in this manner over the years, she is not required to make them up.
This is because there is no explicit and definitive evidence declaring them invalid.
This is a matter of juristic interpretation (ijtihād).
The stronger and more cautious view is what has been stated above.
① A woman cannot validly follow the mosque Imam from her home unless visual connection is established with the Imam or congregation.
② Auditory connection alone is insufficient.
③ Past prayers performed in this manner do not require repetition, as the matter is ijtihād-based and lacks clear nullifying evidence.
