Can a Wife Take Her Husband’s Money Without His Permission?

❀ Taking a Husband’s Money Without His Permission ❀

Source:

This article is derived from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, based on the Fatwas of the scholars of the Haramain. The translation was done by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

I am a married woman. By the grace of Allah, I have a home, a husband, and children. I observe prayers and fasting and fulfill all religious obligations. I have a small question and hope to receive a correct answer. I save some money from the household expenses without informing my husband, and at times, I take some money from his pocket without his knowledge. However, by the grace of Allah, I do not spend it on anything impermissible. My reason is uncertainty about future circumstances and fear regarding my husband and children. Am I sinful for this? I fear Allah and His punishment.

❖ Answer:

In my view, as long as the husband is not being stingy in providing for the legitimate expenses of his wife and children, it is not permissible to take his money without informing him, nor is it allowed to continue saving it in such a manner.

As long as you already possess saved funds, it would be unjustified to demand further expenses from your husband. A husband himself saves and protects money for unexpected future circumstances. Therefore, the saved money should be returned to him, as it is his property that was withheld without his knowledge.
