❖ Question:
A man divorced his first wife and then married another woman. Can his son from the first wife marry the sister of his second (current) wife?
❖ Answer:
Yes, such a marriage is permissible in Islam.
This relationship is not among the prohibited degrees of kinship outlined by Islamic law. Islam has clearly defined the categories of relationships—through blood ties, nursing (raḍāʿah), or marriage—that make certain marriages unlawful. The sister of one’s stepmother (father’s wife) does not fall under any of these prohibitions.
❖ Clarification:
There is no kinship or nursing relation, nor is the woman a direct relative like a mother or a real sister. Therefore, if all other Islamic conditions for a valid marriage are fulfilled, the son is allowed to marry the sister of his father’s wife.
Hence, such a marriage is religiously valid and legally sound.
