Can a Man Marry the Daughter of His Nephew?

Written by: Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Ameenpuri (Hafizahullah)

Question:
Is it permissible for a man to marry the daughter of his nephew (i.e., his sister’s grandson)?

Answer:
Yes, it is permissible. Such a marriage is not among the prohibited relationships in Islam.

Islam outlines specific categories of relatives with whom marriage is forbidden—such as direct ascendants, descendants, siblings, and others by blood, nursing, or marital relations. The daughter of a nephew does not fall within those categories.

There is no bloodline or marital prohibition between an uncle and the daughter of his nephew. Therefore, if all other conditions of a valid Islamic marriage are met, this marriage is permissible and valid according to Shariah.
