Can a Husband Object to How His Wife Uses Her Wealth?

❀ Husband's Authority Over Wife's Wealth ❀

Source:

This article is derived from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, based on the Fatwas of the scholars of the Haramain. The translation was done by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

Does my husband have the right to object if I give my inherited wealth to my mother? And does he have any right to manage or use my personal wealth or salary?

❖ Answer:

A woman is the sole owner of her wealth and has full authority to dispose of it as she wishes. She may give gifts, give in charity, repay debts, or relinquish any of her rights—such as inheritance or debts—whether to relatives or non-relatives. The husband has no right to object to this in any case.

However, this is conditional upon the woman being intelligent and mature. A husband cannot use or manage her wealth without her consent.

If a woman does something with her wealth that hinders the fulfillment of any rights owed to the husband, he may, under specific conditions, prevent her from such actions.

Additionally, a husband and wife may agree mutually to share their salaries. The husband may also permit his wife to abstain from household chores and instead receive compensation from her for transporting her or other similar services.
