❖ Question

If someone has already begun fasting while traveling, can he break his fast during the journey?

✿ Answer

Yes, he may break his fast during travel.

  • There is no sin upon him.
  • However, he must make up (qaḍāʾ) for that day after Ramaḍān.

Evidence from Ḥadīth

Narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1944; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1113)

Translation:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted during his journey in the year of the Conquest of Makkah. Then, when he reached (the place called) Kudayd, he broke his fast.”

✅ Conclusion

  • A fasting traveler can break his fast at any time during travel.
  • It is not sinful, but qaḍāʾ of that fast is obligatory.
