Can ʿAṣr and Maghrib Be Combined During Travel?

Question:

Can ʿAṣr and Maghrib prayers be combined during travel?

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

Answer:

During travel, ʿAṣr and Maghrib cannot be combined. If prayers are to be combined, then:

  • Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr may be combined.
  • Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ may be combined.
  • Fajr is never combined with any prayer.

Scholarly Consensus:

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn al-Mulaqqin رحمه الله (804 AH):

الإجماع قائم على امتناع الجمع بين الصبح وغيرها، وبين العصر والمغرب
“There is consensus that Fajr is not to be combined with any prayer, and likewise, ʿAṣr and Maghrib cannot be combined.”
(al-Iʿlām bi-Fawāʾid ʿUmdat al-Aḥkām, 4/75)

✅ Conclusion:
  • ʿAṣr and Maghrib cannot be combined in travel or otherwise.
  • Only Ẓuhr with ʿAṣr, and Maghrib with ʿIshāʾ are valid for combination.
  • This ruling is established by scholarly consensus.
