Brisk Walking in the First Three Circuits and Normal Walking in the Rest

Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori

The narrations mentioned in the previous discussion are also proof for this ruling. Additionally, raml (brisk walking with short steps to show strength) is done only in ṭawāf al-qudūm or ṭawāf of ‘umrah, as clearly stated in the hadith that when the Prophet ﷺ performed his first ṭawāf (i.e., ṭawāf al-qudūm), he briskly walked in the first three circuits.
(Bukhari: 1617)

No Raml in Ṭawāf al-Ziyārah

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbās رضي الله عنهما narrates that the Prophet ﷺ did not perform raml in the seven circuits of ṭawāf al-ziyārah.
(Sahih: Sahih Abu Dawud: 1762; Abu Dawud: 2001; Ibn Majah: 3060; Nasā’ī al-Kubrā: 4170; Ḥākim: 1/475)

Raml in Ṭawāf al-‘Umrah

Raml is included in ṭawāf al-‘umrah because the Prophet ﷺ commanded it during ‘Umrat al-Qaḍā’.

If missed in the first three circuits:

  • If missed in the first circuit → do it in the remaining two.
  • If missed in the first two circuits → do it in the third.
  • If missed in all three → raml lapses and is not made up later.

If raml is forgotten, there is no requirement to repeat or make it up, because its designated place has passed.

Ruling for the People of Makkah

Raml is not prescribed for the residents of Makkah.

  • This is the position of Ibn ‘Abbās رضي الله عنهما and Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما.
  • Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما would not perform raml if he entered into iḥrām from Makkah.
