Does breastfeeding establish a relationship of prohibition (maḥramiyyah) similar to that of blood relations?
Yes, the same prohibitions that are established through blood relations (nasab) are also established through breastfeeding (raḍāʿah).
❖ ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها narrated:
إِنَّ الرَّضَاعَةَ تُحَرِّمُ مَا تُحَرِّمُ الْوِلَادَةُ
“Indeed, breastfeeding makes unlawful (for marriage) that which blood relations make unlawful.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 2646, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1444
When someone suggested to the Prophet ﷺ that he marry the daughter of Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, he replied:
إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ
“She is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 5100
◈ Breastfeeding establishes the same maḥram relationships as blood lineage does.
◈ Therefore, just as certain relatives are permanently forbidden in marriage due to nasab, the same applies when those ties are formed through breastfeeding.
