Ruling on Blood on Clothes or Body in Relation to Wudu and Salah
Source: Ahkam wa Masail, Chapter: Issues of Purification, Vol. 1, p. 87
If blood gets on a person’s clothes or starts flowing from any part of the body, does his wudu remain valid? Can he perform Salah in that state?
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!
There is no clear evidence in the Qur’an and Sunnah that blood coming from any part of the body other than the two passages (urinary and anal outlets) is najis (impure).
There is proof of the prohibition of consuming blood, but prohibition (hurmah) does not automatically mean physical impurity (najasah).
If blood flows from any part of the body other than the two passages:
➤ There is no evidence in the Qur’an and Sunnah that it breaks wudu.
➤ If blood gets on the body, clothes, or any place:
➤ There is no evidence that this invalidates Salah either.

Question
If blood gets on a person’s clothes or starts flowing from any part of the body, does his wudu remain valid? Can he perform Salah in that state?
Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!
1. No Explicit Proof of Blood’s Impurity Outside the Two Passages
2. Principle for Wudu Invalidation
- The invalidation of wudu is not based merely on the impurity of a substance, but only when there is clear evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
- Example:
- When wind passes, wudu is broken.
- Yet, there is no need to wash the place from which the wind exited, nor the clothes it touched.
- This shows that wudu invalidation depends solely on explicit textual proof, not on whether something is pure or impure.
3. Blood Flow and Its Effect on Wudu and Salah
If blood flows from any part of the body other than the two passages:
➤ There is no evidence in the Qur’an and Sunnah that it breaks wudu.
➤ If blood gets on the body, clothes, or any place:
➤ There is no evidence that this invalidates Salah either.
