Blood Money (Diyyah) for Self-Inflicted Accidental Death in Islam

Narration:
[Reported by Bukhari: 4192, Muslim: 1802]

Translation of the Incident:

Salamah bin al-Akwaʿ رضي الله عنه narrated: When the armies lined up, ʿĀmir bin al-Akwaʿ had a short sword. He attempted to strike a Jew’s leg with it, but the blade rebounded and struck his own knee, causing his death.
This incident is recorded in both Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.

✿ Key Points and Rulings ✿

If someone accidentally injures or kills themselves while attempting to attack another, there is no liability of blood money (diyyah) upon the person they intended to strike.

A person is the master of their own self. If someone causes harm to themselves, neither qisās (retribution) nor diyyah will be applicable on anyone else.
