Bilal رضي الله عنه Sprinkled Water on the Prophet’s ﷺ Grave

❖ Bilal رضي الله عنه Sprinkled Water on the Blessed Grave of the Prophet ﷺ

Authored by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid حفظه الله

✿ The Report from Jabir رضي الله عنه

It is narrated from Jabir رضي الله عنه that:

"Water was sprinkled upon the blessed grave of the Prophet ﷺ. Bilal ibn Rabah رضي الله عنه sprinkled water on the Prophet’s ﷺ grave using a water-skin. He began sprinkling from the head side and continued until the foot side."
[Bayhaqi, Dala'il al-Nubuwwah]

❖ Authentication of the Hadith:

Status of the Chain: Its chain is weak.

  • [Reported by al-Bayhaqi in al-Kubra (3/411) and in Dala’il al-Nubuwwah (7/264). Also mentioned by al-Hafiz in Talkhis al-Kabir (2/133)]

◈ The narrator Waqidi is considered abandoned (matruk) and extremely weak.

  • [See: Mishkat, Hadith no. 1710]

✿ Conclusion:

The narration regarding Bilal رضي الله عنه sprinkling water on the Prophet’s ﷺ grave exists in the books of history, but due to the presence of the weak narrator Waqidi, the hadith is not authentic and cannot be relied upon for establishing any practice.
